Imagine starting a new job, full of hope for the future, only to have your world turned upside down two weeks later.
That is exactly what happened to Kayla in 2023. After finding a lump on her neck and experiencing difficulty swallowing, she was diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma - a rare and aggressive form of thyroid cancer.
The problem for Kayla was a simple one: she had recently taken time off to care for her two small children; and, she hadn't built up enough hours in her new job, in her new role. The result? She was completely ineligible for EI sickness benefits.
Which brings me to a key point: the financial strain of a critical illness doesn’t just come from the loss of a paycheck. Sometimes, the hidden cost is just receiving the treatment. In Kayla’s case, this meant travelling 3 hours from a rural home to an urban centre. In Kayla’s case, this meant leaving young children behind for 6 weeks during treatment, isolating children from their ill parent at a time when both need support, comfort. Between gas, lodging, and everyday expenses, Kayla was left asking herself the same question every day: “Will I have enough money?”
Kayla was lucky. She was supported by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). They had a travel grant. However, this highlights a problem: charitable support from organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society is limited. Even today, being cancer-free since 2024, Kayla still faces ongoing out-of-pocket medication costs because traditional health insurance won't cover her pre-existing condition.
This is why I talk to my clients about Critical Illness Insurance.
Most people assume health insurance or provincial care covers everything. But it doesn't cover the 3-hour drive to the clinic. It doesn't pay the rent when you don't qualify for EI. It doesn't give you the financial freedom to bring your family with you so you don't have to face radiation alone.
A critical illness policy provides a lump-sum, tax-free payment upon diagnosis. It gives you choices. It buys you peace of mind so that you can focus on surviving, not scrolling through your bank app in a hospital room.
We can’t always predict a health crisis, but we can protect ourselves from the financial devastation that follows it.
